You must worship only the LORD your God. He is the one who will rescue you from all your enemies.” [2 Kings 17.39]
Only is rather exclusive, isn't it?
As we read about the spiritual condition of Israel and Judah at this time in history, we will find that neither nation entirely abandoned the worship of God. Instead, they polluted the worship of God by including the worship of foreign gods along with Him. Over and again, we see that God's people failed to trust God alone. They, for whatever reason, felt compelled to include all the other gods they had come into contact with.
Could it be that God's people, at this recorded time in history, were afraid that trusting in God alone would not be enough?
Could it be that God's people, at this present time in history, are afraid that trusting in God alone is not enough?
God is very specific about what and in whom His people trust. God is very specific that His true followers trust in Him alone. Alone (emphasis on alone). You must worship only the LORD your God.
Look at what is written in Isaiah (in today's OYCB reading):
I will cancel the bargain you made to cheat death, and I will overturn your deal to dodge the grave. When the terrible enemy sweeps through, you will be trampled into the ground. Again and again that flood will come, morning after morning, day and night, until you are carried away.” [Isaiah 28.18-19]
This passage, in my understanding, has a contemporary application. Our planet is attempting to cheat death right now through a vaccine. However, if what Isaiah says indeed has any contemporary application, then that vaccine will not save us, In fact, again and again, that flood (of virus after virus) will come.
There is only one solution to COVID-19 and all its variants: repentance.
If these Bible passages from Israel's history teach us anything, they teach us that trusting in anything or anyone besides Almighty God (even if in addition to trusting God), is a recipe for disaster.
Regardless what one believes about what I have said here, it does not change the recorded history of what took place in the history of Israel and why it took place. Israel abandoned pure undefiled worship of God and blended it with all manner of other gods and idols. In fact, in the One Year Chronological Bible, we just read a couple days ago:
Hezekiah son of Ahaz began to rule over Judah in the third year of King Hoshea’s reign in Israel. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. He did what was pleasing in the LORD’s sight, just as his ancestor David had done. He removed the pagan shrines, smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke up the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because the people of Israel had been offering sacrifices to it. The bronze serpent was called Nehushtan. [2 Kings 18.1-4]
Do you see what happened here? Hezekiah broke up the bronze serpent that Moses made (that Israel could look upon and be healed) because Israel had made it into an idol! That bronze serpent on a stick is one and the same as the symbol used today for the medical profession!
So, you want to believe the science? BE WARNED! The science is not your God! The science WILL NOT DELIVER YOU!
Only God will deliver us. Only God will rescue us from that which would destroy us. ONLY God.
Father, forgive me - forgive us - for trusting anything or anyone other than You.
