Got Victory?

Jehoshaphat was terrified by this news and begged the LORD for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting. So people from all the towns of Judah came to Jerusalem to seek the LORD’s help. [2 Chronicles 20.3-4]

We all love this story about how Jehoshaphat led Judah against the troops from Edom (Moabites, Ammonites, and some of the Meunites) in praise - putting the musicians and singers out from and reaping a great victory without a fight.

We love to quote the popular passages found in this story...

He said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. [2 Chronicles 20.15]

and...

Early the next morning the army of Judah went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. On the way Jehoshaphat stopped and said, “Listen to me, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be able to stand firm. Believe in his prophets, and you will succeed.” [2 Chronicles 20.20]

But we must remain mindful that all these quotable passages came only after Judah fasted and prayed.

There aren't many folks quoting the verses about fasting for victory in their lives. Maybe that's why we don't see victories in our lives of the magnitude of the victories documented in the Bible...

Father, forgive me for wanting the victory without seeking You for it.
