“Now’s your opportunity!” David’s men whispered to him. “Today the LORD is telling you, ‘I will certainly put your enemy into your power, to do with as you wish.’” So David crept forward and cut off a piece of the hem of Saul’s robe. But then David’s conscience began bothering him because he had cut Saul’s robe. He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the LORD’s anointed one, for the LORD himself has chosen him.” [1 Samuel 24.4-6]
When David had the chance to relieve himself of Saul and Saul's pursuit to kill him, David refrained.
Why?
It had everything to do with the LORD's anointing upon Saul even though Saul was acting like a complete idiot. David was mindful of God's anointing upon Saul and acted accordingly.
Why is this important to us? Simply because until we understand God's order as it is evidenced in this story, we will never understand Kingdom order that it might be evidenced today.
The reason we do not witness more of the manifest power of God today is because we do not have a clue about Kingdom order.
Jesus, on the other hand, demonstrated what it looks like when Kingdom order is followed. Jesus also made it clear that we are to live and walk in that same Kingdom order (authority). By doing so, we reveal what it is to be in Christ. By doing so, we reveal what it is for Christ to be in us.
When Jesus taught us to pray, "May Your Kingdom come. May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven," He was literally appointing us to Kingdom order. He was giving us vital information as Kingdom representatives how to approach the world in which we live. It has everything to do with Kingdom authority.
God prevails over any and everything earthly. God's Kingdom prevails over any and everything earthly. God's Kingdom representatives therefore prevail over any and everything earthly - Jesus demonstrated this with His life. Jesus furthermore instructed His followers to do likewise. That is why Jesus repeatedly scolded His disciples for their lack of faith.
God's people will never understand and 'live-out' Kingdom order and authority unless we understand why David refused to kill Saul. The same understanding that prevented David from taking Saul's life is one and the same as the Kingdom understanding that leads us to give life (as did Jesus). It has everything to do with anointing and authority. Jesus could not have stated it any more clearly than this:
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.” [Luke 4.18-19]
Jesus made our role in this clear as well:
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. [John 14.12]
Father, help us to comprehend that what You have said is absolute. Help us to understand that You are supreme in every way and that we simply serve You and Your purpose in the earth - Your will on earth AS IT IS IN HEAVEN (just like Jesus did).
