“There should be no poor among you, for the LORD your God will greatly bless you in the land he is giving you as a special possession. [Deuteronomy 15.4]
There should be no poor among you. Key word here is should.
Contrast this verse with the following verse found in Deuteronomy 15.11:
There will always be some in the land who are poor. That is why I am commanding you to share freely with the poor and with other Israelites in need. [Deuteronomy 15.11]
So, there should be no poor among you. BUT, there will always be some in the land who are poor.
Here is a contrast of God and man. Here is the perfect picture of God's love for mankind and man's fallen condition. Because God loves the world, He wants abundance for all. However, because poverty is a manifestation of sin in mankind, it will remain an obstacle for man to overcome by faith.
There you have it.
Father, I am grateful that You are clear about Your intentions for the world - for mankind. I am grateful that I can know, not only that You love the world, but what Your love for the world actually looks like. Let my life reflect Your love for the world.
