The Proud Foolishness of Man (not seeing, hearing, or understanding)

“In the future, when you experience all these blessings and curses I have listed for you, and when you are living among the nations to which the LORD your God has exiled you, take to heart all these instructions. [Deuteronomy 30.1]

I just don't understand how we, with passages like this clearly printed in our Bibles, still think sickness, disease, poverty and turmoil are just random circumstances. Further still, I do not understand how anyone can say that these curses are not a clear call to repentance!

Like I discussed in my post here yesterday, God's people look really out of touch when they say all this talk in Deuteronomy is "Old Testament" as if that justifies random curses on God's people today.

God NEVER said New Testament people had to trade off by experiencing random curses on earth so that they might enjoy the salvation provided in Jesus!

Here is the problem, and it is described just a few verses before the passage listed above:

But to this day the LORD has not given you minds that understand, nor eyes that see, nor ears that hear! [Deuteronomy 29.4]

Compare the verse above to what Jesus said:

‘You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all? [Mark 8.18]

Jesus' question to His disciples in Mark 8 clearly indicates that we have a choice in seeing, hearing, and understanding. This verse from Mark's Gospel is a record of Jesus scolding His disciples for arguing about food - something clearly promised in abundance to the obedient as described in Deuteronomy 28 - the very blessings and curses Moses is referring to in Deuteronomy 30 at the beginning of this post!

Most of the curses described in Deuteronomy 28 have perfectly understandable scientific explanations. "Natural causes" and "economic principles" all contribute to the circumstances we experience today... but are these "causes and principles" the last word on our circumstances? The Bible says, "NO!" Deuteronomy 28 specifically refutes such thinking.

I can think of nothing more absurd than for God's people to so clearly deny God's Word as when they refuse to understand their circumstances in light of God's Word.

I am not saying, "I don't believe the science." God masterminded all that we know as science today and gave us the ability to understand it. It is the proud foolishness of man that dissects and interprets the science without doing so in the laboratory of God's Word.

Father, forgive us for putting science above Your Word.
