The Effectual Fervent Prayer Of A Righteous Man...

So the LORD changed his mind about the terrible disaster he had threatened to bring on his people. [Exodus 32.14]

Why? Why did God change His mind about destroying Israel?

Because, and only because, Moses interceded for them.

God's character is unchanging. But His mind is not. He looks unfavorably upon sin and disobedience - in fact, He turns away from sin.

God's 'look away' from sin is the very thing that unleashes curses upon sin and those who embrace it.

But the voice of one crying out to God on behalf of disobedient people can change God's mind.

Think of it this way: if there are a million people doing wrong, and God looks away, but there is one obedient individual who cries out to Him, God is compelled to look upon that person... Look at this verse found a little further down in Exodus:

If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.” [Exodus 33.13]

God's look upon the one obedient person mentioned above brings His glance back toward the 'group' in which that person is found. And there is blessing.

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. [James 5.16]

Now, more than ever, it is time God's obedient people pray.

Father, if it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.
