But Moses pleaded with the LORD, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.” Then the LORD asked Moses, “Who makes a person’s mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.” [Exodus 4.10-12]
I am sure there was a good reason Moses balked on the 'talking' thing. We have (that I know of) no indication anywhere else that Moses had a legitimate speech impediment of any sort. Nor do we see any mental insufficiency that would render Moses debilitated in his thinking, and therefore, in his speech.
If we give Moses the benefit of the doubt (that he actually had some impairment), it is important to notice God's consideration of the handicap: God made neither indication that He recognized it nor acknowledged it!
Do you suppose God just wasn't aware of it? I don't think so!
It stands out to me that God would have been fully aware of Moses' physical and mental condition. Furthermore, God would have been fully aware if Moses was just trying to excuse himself out of doing God's will. Either way, God never intended to give it a moment's thought.
What does this mean?
It means that God knows our weaknesses. He knows what we are and are not capable of. It means that God is not deterred by our inabilities whatsoever. I believe it means that if He asks a man with no legs to run a marathon, He has every intention of growing those legs out strong and capable to do just that! It means:
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. [Matthew 6.33]
It means:
That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.” “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered. [Matthew 14.15-17]
Circumstances mean nothing to God. The sooner we figure that out, the more effective we will minister as Jesus ministered! Whether it is a physical impairment or a financial shortcoming matters not to God and His will. Ours is simply the task to obey what He says to do - He will provide everything necessary to do His will!
Father, in my own life right now I am seeing this play out before my eyes. Help me have sense enough to just obey You and do what You reveal to me to do and let You take care of the rest (every insufficiency that could be seen as reason NOT to do what You have said).
