The Respect of Silence

“Those were the days when I went to the city gate and took my place among the honored leaders. The young stepped aside when they saw me, and even the aged rose in respect at my coming. The princes stood in silence and put their hands over their mouths. The highest officials of the city stood quietly, holding their tongues in respect. [Job 29.7-10]

Oh wow, until now, I do not recall ever seeing this in Job's statements.

Job is indicting himself in a remarkable way here. In his torrent of words he actually describes the proper way to act in the presence of greatness: to be silent in respect.

And yet, Job's words and complaints literally gush before God.

Father, help me to learn the respect of silence.
