And they [Pharaoh’s cup-bearer and baker] replied, “We both had dreams last night, but no one can tell us what they mean.” “Interpreting dreams is God’s business,” Joseph replied. “Go ahead and tell me your dreams.” [Genesis 40.8]
Here's a thought: dreams got Joseph sold into slavery and dreams got Joseph promoted to 2nd in command in Egypt. Go figure.
I just wish there was a way to know more about Joseph's disposition before, during, and after this time. There are some clues in the narrative of his story, but there remains much we can only speculate about.
One thing is certain, Joseph had dreams that apparently influenced his life greatly.
If we think about it a moment, we have to realize that for Joseph to think God would interpret the cup-bearer's and baker's dreams would necessarily mean Joseph still, in his heart, felt he understood the dreams he had had prior to this time - the dreams, in fact, that landed him in Egypt as a slave!
I think by this time I would have written dreams off as silly and unreliable for any future purpose!
But not so with Joseph! If we can ascertain anything reading between the lines here, it would be that Joseph remained confident that dreams meant something and that that "something" could indeed be understood.
This brings us to the fact that Joseph exercised extreme faith and patience in what he had been made privy to in his own dreams. Wow.
Maybe dreams are just silly. But, maybe not.
Father, help me to be particularly aware of the dreams I have and have Your interpretation of those dreams.
