Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. [Colossians 3.1]
The context of this sentence in Paul's letter to the church at Colosse provides contrast following discourse about the spiritual rulers and authorities of the world in chapter 2.
The phrase "realities of heaven" contrasts the phrase "the spiritual powers of this world" found in verse 20 of chapter 2.
What does this mean?
Well, it means there are indeed two realities: the reality of heaven and the reality of the world. Both realities have to do with rulers and authority. However, the reality (the authority) of heaven transcends the reality of earth.
But, as the scripture reference of this post indicates, the reality of heaven is only 'realized' in Christ Jesus. That is why Paul wrote:
So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. [Colossians 2.10]
and
Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. [Colossians 3.2-3]
The realities of the earth are many. Included in the list would be all the laws of science and physics. They are, in fact, spiritual powers of this world. Also included are all the laws of sin and death which directly relate to the laws of science and physics.
And this is where the magnificence of Christ is seen! He and all who are His transcend the realities of earth. That is why Jesus could walk on water, speak to storms, heal the sick, raise the dead, and multiply mere morsels to feed thousands. That is why Jesus was able to rise victoriously from a tomb!
You see now why Paul would write:
In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. [Colossians 2.3]
What a reality! What a revelation! All praise belongs to God for the reality of heaven as revealed in His One and Only Son, Jesus!
Father, thank You for Jesus! Thank You for the reality of heaven revealed in Him!
