At this time John the Baptist was baptizing at Aenon, near Salim, because there was plenty of water there; and people kept coming to him for baptism. (This was before John was thrown into prison.) A debate broke out between John’s disciples and a certain Jew over ceremonial cleansing. So John’s disciples came to him and said, “Rabbi, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you identified as the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going to him instead of coming to us.” [John 3.23-26]
John was baptizing to reveal or "find" Jesus:
I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.” [John 1.31]
If this is the case, why did John not stop baptizing people after Jesus was revealed?
What's more, why were Jesus and His disciples baptizing people?
The answer to the questions above is a Kingdom answer: Baptism is a symbol of the re-birth of a person so that Christ might be seen in them!
So, with every baptism, there remains a "searching for" Christ!
Question: I have been baptized - is Christ seen in me?
Father, baptism is such a revealing act! Help me to consider and meditate on the full meaning of it!
