The Standard

And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. [Acts 17.11]

If only the Church today would be so diligent to search the Scriptures!

The Church is fortunate that most of those preaching from pulpits are trying to preach the Truth. However, the sad fact is, most of those listening to those preaching just take it for what is said with no research on their own part to compare it to what the Bible actually says. The danger in this is immense.

"Open-minded" is an interesting word for those mentioned here who compared Paul's preaching to the Scriptures. It is actually portrayed here as a spiritually good thing that the Berean people were open-minded.

Open-mindedness today doesn't normally hold the Bible as the Standard and is consequently misguided.

The Scriptures are indeed the Standard by which followers of God are to live and distinguish Truth from error. Not enough do so. I don't do so enough!

Father, help me to compare what I read or hear from others to Your Word. May Your Word be the Standard by which all I come to believe is compared for accuracy and Truth.
