God paid a high price for you, so don’t be enslaved by the world. [1 Corinthians 7.23]
Well, that about sums it up. We belong to God therefore we have no right to allow ourselves to become obligated to the world for anything.
The immediate context of this passage of scripture is Paul encouraging slaves to be content with their social position.
The greater context of this passage of scripture is Paul encouraging all believers to remain in whatever position they are when they become saved whether married or single, circumcised or uncircumcised, salve or free.
It would seem Paul is encouraging believers to avoid binding commitments once they have become believers. Paul recognized that other commitments can be distracting - taking one away from their commitment to the Lord.
But here is the deal. Paul put a disclaimer on what he said here:
Now, I will speak to the rest of you, though I do not have a direct command from the Lord. [1 Corinthians 7.12a]
Paul admits that he is speaking his opinion here on the issues of marriage, circumcision, and slavery and not necessarily the will of God.
So, while there is valid encouragement given by Paul, there is really a heart issue that is at the center of what he is saying: "be content in whatever state you are in." And, it is here that believers must each stand before God and answer for their motives. It is here each and every believer must decide what level of commitment he or she has toward God as compared to other commitments that are options to them.
The fact is, God DID pay a high price for us. It is no insignificant thing that God gave His Son as a sacrifice for our sins! It makes sense then to reciprocate with a matching level of commitment to Him!!!
Father, there is much to be considered here, but really, all that matters is that we seek Your Kingdom first.
