All the people of the earth are nothing compared to him. He does as he pleases among the angels of heaven and among the people of the earth. No one can stop him or say to him, ‘What do you mean by doing these things?’ [Daniel 4.35]
These are Nebuchadnezzar's words about God the Most High after Nebuchadnezzar had his bout of insanity (as foretold in his dream that Daniel interpreted).
To encounter God is to fear Him. It doesn't mean one won't experience His unfailing love and mercy. It doesn't mean one won't experience all the good of heaven. It does however mean no one - none - can encounter God in any frame of mind except humility. To do so is devastating. Nebuchadnezzar found out first hand.
To understand God's holiness is to understand our own wickedness. To encounter God's goodness is to encounter our own evil. To witness God's power is to witness our own weakness. There is nothing man can behold of God without recognizing his own bankruptcy in that same area. Consequently, there is no attitude in which to approach God except humility.
For the record, nothing builds humility in man like repentance.
Father, in every area I consider You, I realize I am bankrupt in that same area. Forgive me for pride and arrogance before You. Forgive me to ever taking glory for myself that belongs to You.
