The king took his place of authority beside the pillar and renewed the covenant in the LORD’s presence. He pledged to obey the LORD by keeping all his commands, laws, and decrees with all his heart and soul. In this way, he confirmed all the terms of the covenant that were written in the scroll, and all the people pledged themselves to the covenant. [2 Kings 23.3]
Most certainly, the scroll found and given to Josiah was what we know today as the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible). These writings would have been Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Of the five books making up the Pentateuch, Deuteronomy would have been the one most clearly containing the "terms of the covenant." And, specifically, Deuteronomy 28 gives the details - look at verse 1:
“If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the world. [Deuteronomy 28.1]
Verse 1 of Deuteronomy 28 precedes the blessings described as God's reward for obedience (obeying Him and keeping all His commands...). Verse 15, then, warns of disobedience:
“But if you refuse to listen to the LORD your God and do not obey all the commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overwhelm you: [Deuteronomy 28.15]
Following verse 15 is an abundant list of curses promised as the reward for disobedience.
No doubt, as Josiah came to these passages in Deuteronomy, it was clear what needed to be done, and that, then is what he did! Josiah got rid of everything that had anything at all to do with disobedience. Drastic changes were made all across the land. Nothing was left that pertained to the worship of anyone or anything except God. In fact, not only were the things destroyed, but there were ceremoniously desecrated to further drive home the point.
Question: what does a "return to God" look like today? (Because, evidently, what we have been doing hasn't worked...)
Father, I will have to ponder my question above. Help me to see what it is that 'needs to go' in and around my life that prevents me from being in 100% obedience to You.
