Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! [Habakkuk 3.17-18]
Wow, that is saying a lot.
The context here is one of judgment. This is not just misfortune. This is surely the work of the Babylonians mentioned in chapter 1 of Habakkuk - the Babylonians chosen by God to bring judgment to His people. At this point, it is not a matter of "if" judgment will come, but "when."
Habakkuk's confession in the verses noted above shows us the right attitude and frame of mind that is found in the genuinely humble and repentant - even in the midst of judgment.
There is joy - a peace - for those who are true servants of God - even in judgment.
I think I will stop here and ponder the sentence just above...
Father, You are my everything. All else is just stuff...
