We Need To Know God

Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. [Isaiah 40.28]

It seems the questions Jesus asked His disciples were not new questions to God's people, "Have you never heard? Have you never understood?"

I am thinking here of Mark chapter 8 where Jesus scolded His disciples for not seeing the obvious signs before them about living and walking by faith. Jesus repeatedly demonstrated to them what a life of faith looked like, but they just could not seem to grasp it.

At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in? ‘You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all? When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?” “Twelve,” they said. “And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?” “Seven,” they said. “Don’t you understand yet?” he asked them. [Mark 8.16-21]

It all starts with knowing Who God Is. He is the Creator of the universe. As such, He is unrestrained by any laws of His creation because He alone possesses the knowledge of how the universe operates. In other words, He is not limited by laws of nature He put in place because nothing 'created' is greater than its 'Creator.'

The Bible is our main source for understanding Who God is. A close second source is the earth and all its marvels (as His creation). However, neither the Bible nor creation will make any sense to the natural mind without the aid of the Holy Spirit. Why? Because who can understand God but God Himself?

In the disciples' defense, while they walked with Jesus, they were not yet endued with the Holy Spirit and, therefore, could only operate and understand what the natural mind was capable of (which was not much compared to the Kingdom operation they witnessed in Jesus). However, after the Holy Spirit was imparted to all who believe, then the miraculous once again was seen.

We need to know God. But, we are limited in our knowledge of God as long as we resist Him and His Spirit's operation through our lives.

Father, help me to stop my natural thinking and really start Kingdom thinking!
