For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil. But in the end she is as bitter as poison, as dangerous as a double-edged sword. [Proverbs 5.3-4]
In today's OYCB reading, it seems Solomon had much to say about the immoral or promiscuous, adulterous woman.
One might think Solomon knew first-hand a bit about this subject!
Unfortunately, we will see in time that Solomon succumbed to the very thing he warned us so strongly against. The women in his life (and they were many) led to his downfall. Solomon's wives, concubines, and others (?) ultimately did not satisfy Solomon's desires and eventually, Solomon even struggled in his relationship with and devotion to God.
Oh, but one can be sure it was good at first! From a man's perspective, Solomon seemed to have, not just all any man could hope for, but an overwhelming abundance of conjugal opportunities - more women than he could ever actually have meaningful relationships with. And, because he was the king, these women were undoubtedly the most beautiful women to be found. But, as Solomon's story will prove, all the beautiful women in the world could not satisfy Solomon's need... Solomon obviously did not vet his women for devotion to God and God alone! His compromise in this matter led to...
But in the end... Solomon would find that what appeared to be bliss was indeed a trap. Solomon's heart had deceived him - his deceitful and desperately wicked heart brought him down. The women of Solomon's life were not all God-fearing women and, consequently, persuaded Solomon to betray God.
The lesson here is not vague. We all need the leadership of God's Holy Spirit, His Word, and a healthy abundance of discipline (provided by the first two) to avoid the pitfalls that our wicked hearts will lead us to. Our satisfaction comes from God alone - any deviation from that truth leads to disappointment and ultimately disaster.
Father, my heart has desired many things. I don't deny that some of things have been good, however, I cannot trust my heart based on occasional good decisions. I need You. Forgive me for thinking otherwise.
