So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and they intermarried with them. Israelite sons married their daughters, and Israelite daughters were given in marriage to their sons. And the Israelites served their gods. [Judges 3.5-6]
God instructed Israel to wipe out the inhabitants of Canaan. He did also say it would take some time, but the main instruction - His covenant terms with them to wipe out the inhabitants of Canaan was never rescinded.
But Israel grew complacent in their attitude toward their enemies. So much did Israel grow complacent about their enemies that they began even to adopt their ways and their gods - something strictly forbidden by God. Complacency was the beginning of faithlessness.
The reminder this serves to give us is that light and darkness have no place with one another. Good and evil cannot co-exist. There is simply no room for any other god in the devotion of God's people to Him.
But humans seem to have this bent towards complacency and its unfaithfulness...
We will not correct our faithlessness unless we recognize it.
Father, help us to see our faithlessness and correct it. Help us believe in Jesus and do everything in our power to be faithful to Him and His ways as demonstrated while He walked the earth. Help us to see that any complacency on our part will not end well...
