Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in. [Mark 6.47-52]
What WAS the significance of feeding the 5000? What WAS it that their hearts were too hard to take in?
Could it have been that Jesus was completely free from the laws of the world? Could it have been that Jesus really was operating in the power of a Kingdom not tethered by human understanding? Did Jesus intend to demonstrate that the very laws of nature had no control over Him?
Apparently so.
Father, I feel so insignificant and small when I consider Jesus' life and ministry on earth. I can see from this passage in Mark today that I should not be surprised by the miraculous. But, I confess, even the smallest little thing that seems the least bit supernatural overwhelms me. Help me to walk in the confidence that Jesus also demonstrated! Help me to walk in faith!
