What Are We Holding On To?

Then some of the leaders of Israel visited me, and while they were sitting with me, this message came to me from the LORD: “Son of man, these leaders have set up idols in their hearts. They have embraced things that will make them fall into sin. Why should I listen to their requests? Tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: The people of Israel have set up idols in their hearts and fallen into sin, and then they go to a prophet asking for a message. So I, the LORD, will give them the kind of answer their great idolatry deserves. I will do this to capture the minds and hearts of all my people who have turned from me to worship their detestable idols.’ [Ezekiel 14.1-5]

There seems to be a real problem with going to a prophet for a "word from God" when people have idols set up in their hearts. These idols are defined as things that make them fall in to sin.

It would seem, that to come to God, we have to let go of everything. We should be holding on to nothing when we approach God. Nothing.

What am I holding on to? Is it an idol in my hands as I approach God? It doesn't matter what it is - if it is so important I must 'hold it in my hand' as I approach God, then it is an idol!

Father, I want to hold only to Your. I want to come before You as I really am - dependent upon You and You alone - complete in You and You alone - fulfilled in You and You alone.
