“I have not sent these prophets, yet they run around claiming to speak for me. I have given them no message, yet they go on prophesying. If they had stood before me and listened to me, they would have spoken my words, and they would have turned my people from their evil ways and deeds. [Jeremiah 23.21-22]
Is it possible that we can see what the work of a true prophet is here? I think so.
The work of a true prophet has the following sign: they turn people from their evil ways and deeds by speaking God's words.
It matters not what a person self-proclaims. Results matter. And, those results are well-defined: people will turn from their evil ways and deeds.
How do we know a prophet has spoken? People will turn from the evil ways and deeds!
How do we know a prophet's words are from God? People will turn from the evil ways and deeds!
Repentance is what we are talking about here. Yep, there it is again.
Father, help us all to grasp the message of repentance. Help us to see that all our religious activity is of no use unless it brings us to repentance!
