What Do You Fear?

He [the LORD] takes no pleasure in the strength of a horse or in human might. No, the LORD’s delight is in those who fear him, those who put their hope in his unfailing love. [Psalm 147.10-11]

Big armies and high-tech weapons just don't really impress God. They never have and the never will.

If God wants His people to know - to really know - one thing, it is that He will take care of them if they only trust Him.

There is something to "fearing" God too that should not be overlooked. To fear anything is to give that thing power. Whatever we fear the most has the most power over our lives. To fear anything more than God is to give that thing a higher place than God. To give anything a higher place than God is idolatry.

I know we don't want to talk much about fearing God, but we need to have the conversation. God is to be feared. Unlike temporal storms that can hurt us and cause physical and material loss on earth, God can share His home in heaven with us or sentence our souls to an eternity in hell. Unlike cancer that can cause pain and suffering on earth, God can turn His face leaving us to an eternity of torment.

If God be for us, then who can be against us? But if God be against us, who can effectively be for us? We need to fear God.

We have tried to make the fear of God different that the fear of flying. This is nothing more than proud attempts by man to resist the greatness and sovereignty of God. God should not be feared like the fear of flying - He should be feared much more! God should not be feared like cancer - He should be feared even more!

The is a humility in fear. Real fear understands and communicates that the thing feared is greater. To give this fear to anyone or anything besides God, again, is idolatrous.

Father, help me as I consider what I fear!
