After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the LORD’s Temple and spread it out before the LORD. And Hezekiah prayed this prayer before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel, you are enthroned between the mighty cherubim! You alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You alone created the heavens and the earth. Bend down, O LORD, and listen! Open your eyes, O LORD, and see! Listen to Sennacherib’s words of defiance against the living God. [2 Kings 19.14-16]
Hezekiah got bad news. Annihilation was imminent. The powerful overcoming King of Assyria had set his sights on Jerusalem. No one had been able to resist him up to this point or defend themselves against the Assyrians. The situation looked grim and hopeless.
But Hezekiah prayed.
Hezekiah took time in his prayer to say this part of the passage above: “O LORD, God of Israel, you are enthroned between the mighty cherubim! You alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You alone created the heavens and the earth."
Why?
Why indeed!
Did God need to know that He was God of Israel? No.
Did God need to know that He was enthroned between the mighty cherubim? No.
Did God need to know that He alone is God of all the kingdoms of the earth? No.
Did God need to know that He alone created the heavens and the earth? Again, no.
Then why did Hezekiah say these words? Why, in such a desperate situation, did Hezekiah take the time to say these things?
He said these things to himself and to those listening! Hezekiah was reminding himself, before he asked for help, Who it was that he was asking for help from! IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE KNOW TO WHOM WE ARE SPEAKING WHEN WE PRAY!!!!
Know Who you are praying to!
In rehearsing Who God is, we are building faith. We are speaking to ourselves - we are bolstering our confidence that we are nothing but He to Whom we are calling is everything!
Father, You are God and there is no other! You make me victorious! I will not fear. Thank You!
