Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who could possibly govern this great people of yours?” [2 Chronicles 1.10]
Solomon's request of God is rich in instruction for us.
Why was God so pleased with Solomon's request? Because Solomon's request was chock full of the thing that pleases Him most - faith.
Solomon's request acknowledged that he was incapable of accomplishing the task of ruling God's people. Solomon's request acknowledged that God was capable of leading His people. Solomon's request acknowledged that God could lead His people through him. Solomon's request acknowledged that he was, in fact, asking God for the wisdom and knowledge necessary to lead God's people.
I think furthermore that Solomon's request was not a request for help. It was a request borne of complete dependence. Solomon did not request God's help - He requested God.
Solomon's request revealed complete faith in God.
God is (and would be) most pleased when we offer the same genuine and complete faith in Him. But, it seems, most of the time, we merely request God's help - as if we are partially capable of something on our own. That is not faith and it does not please God.
There is much to think about today!
Father, I want to trust You in a way that is pleasing to You. I don't need Your help - I need You - Your wisdom and knowledge - as I have nothing of value to contribute.
