“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The LORD brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the LORD has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.” Then the LORD turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” [Judges 6.13-14]
If God is with us, why are all these bad things happening?
Good question.
I just want to point one thing out about this little story and, in particular, this question. Gideon asked the question.
Why is it important that Gideon asked the question? Because Gideon was the answer to the question - he was the solution to the problem.
Let me say it like this, "Why, God, are all these bad things happening?" "Because you are doing nothing, Gideon."
Sometimes when we recognize something as a problem, that is God's direction for us to solve it. In other words, if we will receive it, our recognition of a problem is the very circumstance God will use to empower us to solve it.
We should take some time to consider this.
Father, help me to consider the real possibility that the problems I see are the circumstances You wish to show Yourself strong through me to solve.
