But God is my helper. The LORD keeps me alive! May the evil plans of my enemies be turned against them. Do as you promised and put an end to them. [Psalm 54.4-5]
I love the Psalms of David. There is much to learn of the faith and character of David through them.
However, there is also much revealed about the character of God in David's Psalms. In the case of the passage above, it is revealed that God is our helper. It is also revealed that it is God Who keeps us alive.
Because of God's character, David proclaimed that his opponents' plans would be turned against them.
Then David goes even further with a request to God: "Do as You promised and put an end to them." David was speaking directly about his enemies.
Where was this promise David spoke of?
I can imagine David had many promises upon which he based his statement, but the most prominent ones would be found in Deuteronomy 28 - the promises of blessing upon the lives of the obedient. These promises held great value to David and other Old Testament figures who were faithful to God and did the best they could to serve and honor Him.
But, as good and reliable as the promises of blessings found in Deuteronomy 28 were to David and others, they carry much more meaning to us today. Why? Because Jesus fulfilled all the "obedience" part for us. He did it willingly and perfectly and signified its completion on the cross when He said, "It is finished."
So, how much confidence do we, as believers in Christ, have today to request of God, "Do as You promised and put an end to them." ?
Father, do as You promised and put an end to the opponents of my life. I have done Your will in Christ - not me, but Christ in me.
