“But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?” [John 8.33]
You know what's really interesting about this verse (spoken by Jewish people)? It simply was not true.
Hello Egypt! Had these folks forgotten their slavery in Egypt? How did they manage to forget that? The very situation that led to Moses coming on the scene and the Law begin given to Israel in a covenant relationship... what was that?
But before we get too hard on the Jewish people who made the statement above, let us consider ourselves! What do we say about ourselves that is simply not true? How about this, "I don't need to repent..."?
The list of things we say that are simply not true could be volumes. But most folks don't even care! If we truly cared, we would devour God's Word daily - we would see that no amount of the bread from heaven is ever enough! We tell ourselves we are good enough (the problem with "good enough" is that it is neither "good" nor "enough") and have no need for change. Our lives are saturated with lies and we are content with that condition - even in denial that there even is a condition. We are willfully ignorant evidenced by our lack of God's Word. We are content to know the stories of the Bible without ever understanding the Story of the Bible.
The biggest lie we all tell ourselves is that we are okay. But a simple review of world events should tell us that we are sick and in need of healing. We live subject to every curse spoken of in Deuteronomy 28 and say it isn't a curse! We declare our world's problems aren't ours... We say our nation's problems aren't ours, we say our state's problems aren't ours, we say our county's problems aren't ours, we say our city's problems aren't ours, and we even have the audacity to say our family's problems aren't ours... Is it any wonder then that we justify ourselves rather than God to think we do not need change in our lives?
We need the truth and we need to repent!
Father, I guess I just lost any popularity context here... Please forgive me for my pride, arrogance, and yes, even my willful ignorance.
