There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. [John 3.18]
And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment. [John 3.36]
These two verses say the same thing. The first was spoken by Jesus and the second by John the Baptist.
I think the agreement of these two verses should speak to our hearts that there is pure truth contained in them for us to learn from.
Both verses indicate a default condition of judgment upon those who do not believe in Jesus.
Both verses indicate a transcending power of faith to elevate the believer out of the condition of judgment and into eternal life (eternal freedom from judgment).
So what is a default condition of judgment? It is sickness. It is poverty. It is disaster. It is confusion. It is the fallen world (everything described in Deuteronomy 28's list of curses upon disobedience). It is everything Jesus healed and delivered people from!
Jesus went on to demonstrate what "faith in the Son of Man" looked like - He healed the sick, preached the Gospel to the poor, raised the dead... If Jesus demonstrated this life and walk on earth, it was for our benefit to understand what our walk on earth should look like too.
Jesus repeatedly spoke of the Kingdom of God and faith.
Why then don't we see more miracles today? The answer is simple (but with complex implications): Because we lack faith in Jesus. We continue to experience the conditions of judgment because we do not effectively believe in Jesus as the two verses above testify to.
So, what do we do?
The proud will devise (and have devised) complex doctrines in direct opposition to the Word of God that call evil good and good evil. It is unfortunate, but there is a large following of this erroneous mindset today. There are those who blatantly demand that God uses cancer (for example) to reveal His great love for people even though cancer is clearly defined in Deuteronomy 28 as a curse (judgment) upon disobedience (Deuteronomy 28.20-24).
The humble and contrite on the other hand, will repent. They will repent, and, they will repent until they believe ("Lord, help my unbelief!"). And, when they believe, there will be miracles.
Father, help my unbelief!
