God Controls The Weather

Say this to those who worship other gods: “Your so-called gods, who did not make the heavens and earth, will vanish from the earth and from under the heavens.” But the LORD made the earth by his power, and he preserves it by his wisdom. With his own understanding he stretched out the heavens. When he speaks in the thunder, the heavens roar with rain. He causes the clouds to rise over the earth. He sends the lightning with the rain and releases the wind from his storehouses. The whole human race is foolish and has no knowledge! The craftsmen are disgraced by the idols they make, for their carefully shaped works are a fraud. These idols have no breath or power. Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies! On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed. But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists, including Israel, his own special possession. The LORD of Heaven’s Armies is his name! [Jeremiah 10.11-16]

It struck me today that God controls the weather.

But do we really believe that? I don't think we do. 

I think we really believe the weather is something that is independent of God and does whatever it is going to do based on weather patterns and man's own climate manipulation. I think we really believe the weather is something we understand independent of God that can be predicted in natural "God-less" terms. 

We look at weather men as "prophets" of this belief. We have totally bought into the deception that weather can be predicted based on natural observations.

Isn't this the same thing we have done with health? We have educated ourselves right out of the belief that God controls everything including our health.

Isn't this the same thing we have done with wealth? We have made our hard work and education the source of our prosperity independent of faith in God.

Oh, be sure of this, our religious mindset won't allow us to call these things what they really are - idols. Instead, we say, "oh, of course, God helps us to understand these things..." as if to throw God the proverbial bone like the Oscar-winner naming insignificant others while they themselves hold high the prized Oscar in their hands.

Am I being over-the-top? Maybe. But what if I am not? Can we risk this "God-is-my-co-pilot" mentality?

Any thing we think we have figured out is likely our downfall in faith that God is in control. Whether its the weather, health, wealth - whatever.

I am growing more and more to prefer the appearance of the "uneducated" belief that God is in control of EVERYTHING rather than to give myself, education, or mankind any credit whatsoever for the circumstances around me.

A day of reckoning is coming. On that day I don't want to find out that all man's knowledge and efforts are idols in the eyes of God.

Father, You are Creator of everything. You are in control of everything. Help me to rid my mind of self-dependence, knowledge-dependence, technology-dependence... Help me to depend on You and You alone - help me to give You the highest place of dependence in my life - I need You - I rely on You. YOU are my everything.
