Reconcile The Sabbath and Pork

You must not eat any detestable animals that are ceremonially unclean. [Deuteronomy 14.3]

Although this command is not one of the Ten Commandments, it apparently made quite an impact on ancient Jewish history and Israel's diet.

It would be nice to be able to reconcile the commandments (from yesterday's reading) about the Sabbath and today's reading about eating certain animals with the New Testament records we have of Jesus violating the Sabbath and Peter's vision of the sheet where he was told to "eat" the unclean animals found on that sheet.

What about the life and ministry of Jesus, including His work on our behalf, made it okay to break the Sabbath and to eat pork (among other things formerly forbidden)?

Why were no allowances made by the New Covenant to break other commandments? Why just the two mentioned here?

I wish I was just asking these questions to set up for an explanation, but I am not. I do not know.

I shall, however, be on the watch for clues...

Oh, I am certain I could Google it or seek out the explanations of religious academia, but how can I be sure their opinions are any more valid than my own?

Father, I certainly feel I have made no contribution to anything today. Please help me to understand the significance of the Sabbath and forbidden foods taking new meaning in Christ.
