Just Do What You Are Told

Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you. [Deuteronomy 4.2]

"Just do what you are told."

How many times have those of us who are parents said the very words above?

Why is it that humans always try to bring up alternative situations where the rules need further explanation? Ever notice, that the alternative situations we think of almost always involve "someone else" and not us, the person actually asking for clarification?

The very fact that we feel the need for clarification of instructions we are given by God is most likely a sign of our own pride and unwillingness to conform with what God said in the first place.

Why not just do what He says?

Good question. The answer is this: because blindly doing what He says makes us uncomfortable - we really don't want to do it. We are like the game show contestant who "passes" on a question they do not know except we pass on it because we don't want to comply (usually explaining our disobedience as failure to understand the instruction).

Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

Yes, I indict myself here.

Father, help me to simply obey You and Your Word. Help me likewise to obey the leading of Your Holy Spirit.
