When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” [Exodus 32.1]
These are the same people who had witnessed all the miraculous signs Moses performed in Egypt. These are the same people who witnessed the Passover and the distinction between Israel and the Egyptians. These are the same people who, not only witnessed the parting of the Red Sea, but walked through it on dry ground and then witnessed behind them the armies of Egypt swallowed up as the Red Sea returned to its normal state. These are the same people who witnessed biter water made sweet. These are the same people who witnessed the provision of quail. These are the same people who witnessed mannah every day. These are the same people who witnessed water spring from a rock. These are the same people who witnessed great victory over the people of Amalek. These are the same people who witnessed God leading them by cloud by day and by fire by night. These are the same people who witnessed the glory of God on Mount Sinai.
What in the world happened that suddenly they forgot all this?
Father, the inclination to sin is greater than any of us can imagine. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one...
