Live What We Believe - Believe What We Live (Confident Humility)

My conscience is clear, but that doesn’t prove I’m right. It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide. [1 Corinthians 4.4]

Paul made a huge statement here.

First, for one to say his conscience is clear is a bold exclamation. He is saying there is nothing in his recollection for which he feels guilt. Is that even possible? Should it worry me that I would ask if that is even possible? Should it worry me if I think it is possible?

Regardless of of my questions above, Paul indeed made the statement and it is recorded for what has proved to be hundreds of years.

Next, Paul clearly qualifies his confidence with the statement, "But that doesn't prove I'm right." Now, that's a real deflator! For all the boldness of the first part of Paul's statement in saying his conscience was clear, he then removed any arrogance from that statement with the qualifier, "I might be wrong."

I think the attitude Paul displayed in this statement is what is most important. We should strive to do good. We should not be satisfied with anything in our lives that results in guilt. We should live what we believe and we should believe what we live! BUT! A humble spirit about ourselves is the only way God can truly use us. We must remain humble and understand that we have every capacity to be wrong.

Father, help us to remain confidently humble before You.
