On October 31 the people assembled again, and this time they fasted and dressed in burlap and sprinkled dust on their heads. Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners as they confessed their own sins and the sins of their ancestors. They remained standing in place for three hours while the Book of the Law of the LORD their God was read aloud to them. Then for three more hours they confessed their sins and worshiped the LORD their God. [Nehemiah 9.1-3]
I have just some observations here today.
The Israelites fasted and prayed in assembly.
They confessed not only their own sins, but the sins of their ancestors.
They stood for three hours listening to "Bible."
Then the next three hours they repented of their sins and worshiped God.
While it may be argued that Jesus is our modern-day Redeemer (and He is) and therefore we have no need to ritual and rites, it may also be argued that modern-day Christians know little of commitment and faithfulness.
We need somehow to rejuvenate commitment and faithfulness in our lives without reverting to legalism and therefore denying Jesus.
Father, I know You have no intention for us to go back to the Law and the salvation-less life it brings. However, I also know there is great responsibility in our right-standing with You provided by Jesus and the faith You have given us. I know we are part of Your Kingdom and yet we act more like we belong to a party club instead of Your family. Help me, help us, to glorify You with our lives - whatever that looks like.
