“We will not listen to your messages from the LORD! We will do whatever we want. We will burn incense and pour out liquid offerings to the Queen of Heaven just as much as we like—just as we, and our ancestors, and our kings and officials have always done in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For in those days we had plenty to eat, and we were well off and had no troubles! [Jeremiah 44.16-17]
I am afraid we all sometimes make similar statements to God and each other. We do this when we, like Israel, fail to recognize that God is always working in our lives and that we often fail Him and suffer consequences for it. It is in the midst of those consequences that we proudly declare our innocence instead of confessing our sin and being forgiven.
Pride is the root cause of much of our troubles.
Father, I am taking a look at my life today, with the intent to observe where pride has blinded me and even caused confusion about sin in my life. Father, I recognize that every bad thing in my life is ultimately the result of sin and that no amount of manmade doctrine or theology will relieve me of that sin-burden (regardless how crafty our explanations are that our problems are not our own doing).
