“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. [Isaiah 55.8-9]
Just when I thought there was nothing more that could possibly be learned about the Model Prayer Jesus taught us to pray, this jumped out at me like a freight train.
You know, there is a reason Jesus taught us to pray for God's will on earth "as it is in heaven." It was because He knew that, left to ourselves we would come up with all kinds of stupid stuff to pray based on our own reasoning and logic.
But Jesus gave us the remedy for our own reason and logic and the tragedy they lead to. He must have been thinking of this passage from Isaiah when He instructed His followers to pray, "May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven..." because heaven is higher than the earth! Our reasoning and logic are earthly. The conclusions we draw are based on earthly things like science and our experience. But as real as those earthly things may seem, they are still far below heaven.
So, I want to pray for the way things are in heaven!
Now, there are those who would construe this passage from Isaiah to mean that God would resort to sickness and disease and poverty and destruction as "higher ways." My argument to that would be: read the Bible and learn Who God is! Or, just read the context of Isaiah 55 following the passage above!
Father, I am so grateful for Your amazing Word. Thank You for speaking to me so clearly from it!
