“But perhaps you will say to me, ‘We are trusting in the LORD our God!’ But isn’t he the one who was insulted by Hezekiah? Didn’t Hezekiah tear down his shrines and altars and make everyone in Judah and Jerusalem worship only at the altar here in Jerusalem? [2 Kings 18.22]
Did Hezekiah insult God by tearing down His shrines and altars? NO!
Misinformation was a problem in the passage above.
Misinformation is a problem today.
Although some of the informational and historical facts found in the Bible present some challenges, the overall story of all the writings contained therein remains consistent: God loves His people and wishes to bless them; sin is a problem that results in His blessing being traded for selfish motives that then results in curses. Even still, God offers redemption through obedience and furthermore paid the price for sin with His own blood requiring only faith in return.
The fact is, Hezekiah did not tear down God's shrines - he instead destroyed and eliminated the facilities of worship of false gods. Sennacherib king of Assyria was simply incorrect with his facts and put out misinformation about Hezekiah.
Likewise, a lot of people are told, and therefore believe, a lot of things about God (the divided Church proves that). But, there IS truth and truth will prevail.
Many people spend a lot of effort to explain the Bible to mean something is does not say instead of just believing and therefore explaining the Bible to mean what it actually says. These people are promoting misinformation just like Sennacherib did to Hezekiah and Judah.
We are accountable however for the truth. God will not judge us according to misinformation, but by truth - regardless of what even the most powerful forces tell us. God's truth is not secret - it has been revealed. The Bible IS that revelation of truth.
Father, help us to accept Your Word as truth. When we encounter difficult passages of scripture, help us to conform to the Word rather than construing misinformation to make it conform to us.
