But can the ax boast greater power than the person who uses it? Is the saw greater than the person who saws? Can a rod strike unless a hand moves it? Can a wooden cane walk by itself? [Isaiah 10.15]
In the context of Isaiah chapter 10, the prophet is speaking for Yahweh and addressing the king of Assyria. This king is the one God declared as an instrument of His anger against both Israel and Judah. God allow the king of Assyria to overcome His people because of their disobedience.
However, the king of Assyria, failed to recognize that he was merely a tool. He was boastful as if he was his own strength. That's just a bad plan any time and in any situation.
All of us should remain mindful that no matter how great a tree we chop down, we are nevertheless only the ax and not the Hand that swings it. No matter how great a ministry we may have, we are only the mouthpiece and not the Speaker. No matter how great the compassion we demonstrate, we are only the messenger and not the One Who sent the message.
Unless we purposefully and proactively remind ourselves of our humble position, we will ultimately slip into pride and assume a position that is not ours - a position we are incapable of holding.
Father, please help me to remember that You are the One Who gives me strength. It is You Who places me in effective ministry. It is You Who gives me the power to earn a living. It is You Who navigates the balance between work and ministry in my life so that nothing is left lacking in either realm. I am merely a tool in Your hands.
