True Wisdom

“God alone understands the way to wisdom; he knows where it can be found, for he looks throughout the whole earth and sees everything under the heavens. He decided how hard the winds should blow and how much rain should fall. He made the laws for the rain and laid out a path for the lightning. Then he saw wisdom and evaluated it. He set it in place and examined it thoroughly. And this is what he says to all humanity: ‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.’” [Job 28.23-28]

True wisdom is summed up in this: the fear of the LORD. More clearly, to fear God means to forsake evil.

In religious circles, we have heard a lot about the fear of the LORD. There has been much said and written about what that phrase really means. I think Job has given us about as good a definition as we will ever get though - to fear God means to forsake evil.

As I considered what it means to forsake evil, I realized it involves an action of purpose. In other words, to forsake evil requires doing something that may not come naturally. It is easier, for example, to ignore a widow in need, but it requires an action of purpose to take care of her.

If we fast-forward from Job to Jesus, we see that Jesus' life and ministry demonstrated wisdom in His actions of purpose!

Father, it is apparent that Job had at least some understanding regarding wisdom. Help me to glean from his experiences what will help and inspire me to walk in true wisdom!
