Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” [2 Corinthians 6.14-18]
I think many of us claim we do not really understand this passage of Scripture. My concern however is that, perhaps rather than not understanding, we are really just not willing to comply.
The timing of reading this Scripture today is very relative for me. I am facing a decision of whether or not to be part of the ownership of a new company where the four other owners display, in varying degrees, little or no outward signs of true faith in Christ. I actually think that each of my potential business partners, in their own way, believes in God. The problem with this lies in the fact that their "own way" may not actually be through Jesus Christ. I am sure from long-term relationships and conversations over time with three of the men that they are not haters of God, but they are not living for God as I have grown to understand "living for God" to mean either. The other, I simply do not know where he stands, but from what I have seen and heard in my short acquaintance with him, I doubt a dynamic relationship with God exists in his life. From the group collectively, I have heard only slight references to prayer (no more than the world casually mentions prayer), but no mention whatsoever of reading the Bible or carrying on any type of life of devotion.
Does "team up" mean being part of ownership, or does it mean working alongside (in "harmony") for a common goal, period? When looking at it from this perspective, very few Christians I know are in compliance with this Scriptural instruction because they work for non-Christian organizations (meaning the owners or managers are not believers). Where are the lines drawn?
I could ask "what should I do?" but in reality, I should ask, "how should I do it?".
Father, You know the struggles I have had internally with this dilemma. I regret that it is even a 'dilemma' with me - it just proves that I am weak in my devotion to You. Help me to clearly make a Kingdom decision here and, in time, reap the benefit of seeking Your Kingdom first! Let my decision be a witness and testimony to all who have any part in it!
