Will God's Character Be Consistent Today?

Come here and listen, O nations of the earth. Let the world and everything in it hear my words. For the Lord is enraged against the nations. His fury is against all their armies. He will completely destroy them, dooming them to slaughter. [Isaiah 34.1-2]

If we know nothing of God personally, we can be sure that His nature is revealed to us through the pages of the Bible. Whether or not a person believes the Bible is irrelevant to this claim. What matters is that God has revealed His nature and character in His history with His people as recorded in the pages of the Bible. If then, the Bible is indeed true, then we may reasonably conclude that God's character is consistent with this record of Him.

Isaiah made many claims as to God's intentions for Judah in particular. These claims were not unique in a general sense because God had made similar claims through other prophets at other times. The only real unique fact about all these prophecies is that a common thread theme is shared by most all of them. God warns His people that troublesome times are coming due to their abandonment if Him and His will. And, in most cases, God offers His assurance that He will bring His people back to Him and there will be a subsequent time of restoration and healing.

So, due to the repeated accounts of God's warnings, punishment, and restoration, we may conclude that by these character representations we may learn that God warns, punishes, and restores. That's what He does - He loves His people, so He refuses to allow them an 'easy road' to turn away from Him. The Bible records time and again accounts of God's love, justice, and mercy.

My question is: Will God's character be consistent today? If it is, then trouble lies ahead!

Father, help me to be a catalyst for repentance - first with myself and then with others.
