What sorrow awaits those who look to Egypt for help, trusting their horses, chariots, and charioteers and depending on the strength of human armies instead of looking to the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. In his wisdom, the Lord will send great disaster; he will not change his mind. He will rise against the wicked and against their helpers. For these Egyptians are mere humans, not God! Their horses are puny flesh, not mighty spirits! When the Lord raises his fist against them, those who help will stumble, and those being helped will fall. They will all fall down and die together. [Isaiah 31.1-3]
The message here for Israel would seem appropriate for us today.
Anything we are trusting in for our safety besides the LORD is something we have, by our misplaced faith, doomed to failure and disaster. Our mistaken 'savior' doesn't have to be wicked either. When we give to anyone or anything the trust God placed in every human for Himself, we invoke the jealousy of God - and the outcome of misplaced faith is good for no one!
As believers in Christ, Christians should be particularly attentive to this. God has given to every man the 'measure of faith' (Romans 12.3) and that gift of faith was given to man to reach out to God and no other.
Today is a good day to evaluate our faith - to determine where our trust is placed - to see what or who we are relying on to care for us. Is it God? Or, is it a nation? Is it a political party? Is it an advocacy group or organization? Is it our own efforts or preparedness? Ouch!
Father, I want to trust in You and You alone. Help me today to soberly evaluate and adjust my faith so that I am trusting only in You!
