Fearlessness and Faithfulness

David now mustered the men who were with him and appointed generals and captains to lead them.  He sent the troops out in three groups, placing one group under Joab, one under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and one under Ittai, the man from Gath.  The king told his troops, “I am going out with you.”  But his men objected strongly.  “You must not go,” they urged.  “If we have to turn and run—and even if half of us die—it will make no difference to Absalom’s troops; they will be looking only for you.  You are worth 10,000 of us, and it is better that you stay here in the town and send help if we need it.” [2 Samuel 18.1-3]

There exists some uncertainty as to the actual interpretation of the statement above regarding the number 10,000.  Some manuscripts read, "There are 10,000 like us..."

Either way, the point is that David was highly regarded as a human being and as a leader.

I don't really know why this stands out to me today, but the entirety of today's OYCB reading speaks to me of loyalty.  No doubt, David's life became riddled with trouble all stemming back to his indiscretion with Bathsheba.  However, he was still David the fearless giant-killer!  His valuation among his followers was high - perhaps higher than any before or after him.  Those who knew him recognized the value of such a human being - and were quite willing to lay down their lives on his behalf.

It also stands out to me today that, even with all the responsibilities of being king, David took the time to write songs to God.  Because of this, we have great insight into David's heart - what he was feeling and what he did about those feelings.  In this also, there is clear direction for us to remain focused on the LORD and His Kingdom in whatever circumstance we find ourselves.

David truly was a unique man - an inspiration to his people and time and an inspiration to us and our time.

Father, thank You for the life and story of David.  Yes, he made mistakes - colossal ones, but he remained focused on You regardless.  David's fearlessness and his faithfulness are a model to all!
