So David reigned over all Israel and did what was just and right for all his people. [2 Samuel 8.15]
I guess it would be nice if this was the end of the story. But we all know that David's reign included a lot of grief and turmoil following this time. Adultery, deception, and betrayal are just a few of the problems that were to take place in the years following this time.
It is worth remembering also that there was no shortage of problems leading up to this time in David's history.
What does this mean to us?
Perhaps David's story gives us insight into our own lives - that there will be good times and bad times - times of trial and times of victory. One has to question whether all the victory David experienced was worth all the defeat and heartache. But what does it matter - did David have any real control over it anyway?
It is all too easy to review David's life declaring what we would or wouldn't do in each of David's situations as if we could (let alone, would) do any differently. I distinctly remember a preacher emphatically declaring years ago in regards to what a person says they would or wouldn't do in particular situations: "You don't know what you would do!" He was right.
Father, I am feeling particularly vulnerable today. I need You to shepherd me - to lead me and guide me. I am asking You to take control of my every function so that I might glorify Your Name in serving Your Kingdom.
