Stairway To Heaven (title really has nothing to do with the post - its just a cool title)

At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac.  The ground you are lying on belongs to you.  I am giving it to you and your descendants.  Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth!  They will spread out in all directions—to the west and the easet, to the north and the south.  And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants.  What’s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go.  One day I will bring you back to this land.  I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.” [Genesis 28.13-15]

Stairway to heaven.  Hmm, that would make a great song title!

What's interesting is that this circumstance is where God Himself confirms the blessing spoken by Isaac over his deceptive second-born son.  And what a blessing it is!

In reflection of my post yesterday, I wonder if the importance of the spoken blessing is found in a conscious awareness of THE covenant that would make way for Messiah?  Could that spoken blessing have been the vehicle through which Abraham and then Isaac both realized they were responsible to pass on?  And then, this appearance by God to Jacob - once again a spoken blessing - only confirmed that which was already in place and in motion...

Could this explain why the spoken blessing is not as prevalent today?  It could be except that another equally important universal event is pending today... the Second Coming.  Should there not be some anticipation of that (even though Messiah's next appearance is not dependent upon human lineage) ?  I am just posing questions here - thinking out loud as it were.

I have some thoughts about the Leah / Rachel dilemma Jacob found himself in....  Messiah (Jesus) was to be identified through the lineage of Judah (Lion of the Tribe of Judah).  There has to be some message in the facts of this story that "unloved" Leah carried the child of covenant lineage while "very much-loved" Rachel carried the child responsible for preserving that covevant lineage!  Go figure!  This case proves that God actually chose to use a multiple-wife situation in, not just making Bible filler stories, but advancing His Covenant plan through this particular timeframe.

Father, I am grateful that You are faithful to Your promises - Your Covenant - that pre-dated the Law.  Help me to take a fresh look at this covevant and learn what is really important about it and it's transference through time and lineages.
