Blessing and Birthright

Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably and said, “Then who just served me wild game?  I have already eaten it, and I blessed him just before you came.  And yes, that blessing must stand!” [Genesis 27.33]

Talk about believing what you say!

In out modern culture, I think we have no idea whatsoever about this matter of 'blessing' discussed in this part of the Bible.  It was not just a ritual!  The blessing Isaac spoke over his 'firstborn' carried power.  It carried prophecy.  It laid out events for the future of the one over whom it was spoken as well as the future of those around that person in consequence.  The words of this blessing were not just wishful thinking but they were literally working fact!

Pretty much all we do today is sit and wonder about this 'blessing' as given by Isaac (if we even do that).  The implications of this event on fathers and sons for every generation to follow are overwhelming.  The authority of fathers to 'bless' and the responsibility of sons to 'be blessed' are inconceivable in today's culture.  And, there is the matter of 'birthright' that accompanies the blessing.

As I write this, I cannot even imagine such power in the spoken word.

Father, I am overwhelmed with the thought of such powerful words of blessing over a son.  Even with no comprehension of what a firstborn really is, the blessing itself is mind-blowing!  I feel like, as a society, and more so as Christ followers, we have a gaping hole in our family unit in regard to this issue of 'birthright and blessing.'
