It is beyond my power to do this,” Joseph replied. “But God can tell you what it means and set you at ease. [Genesis 41.16]
This was the second time Joseph made this or a similar statement regarding the interpretation of dreams. It gives a clear picture into Joseph's attitude about his gift. I like how he made this statement and immediately followed up with, "tell me the dream..."
What I see in Joseph's handling of these interpretation requests is not only humility, but also great confidence. The combination of these two characteristics is rare. However, it is not uncommon to find these two characteristics working in synergy in leaders who have proven themselves to be great.
I suppose it matters not what gift each of us has as long as we use that gift in humility and confidence. It is likely no coincidence that in both instances noted in today's OYCB reading of Joseph's interpreting dreams that he first responded in humility, only then to respond in confidence. First humility, then confidence.
Again, first humility, then confidence.
The two characteristics of humility and confidence hardly even seem compatible, but Joseph displayed what seems the perfect blend of the two.
Father, any and every gift You have given me is Yours to do with as You please. Please forgive me for pride in thinking these gifts are mine, but also for false humility when these gifts are needed.
