Hezekiah Prayed, And So Should We

“It is true, Lord, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all these nations.  And they have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them.  But of course the Assyrians could destroy them!  They were not gods at all—only idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands.  Now, O Lord our God, rescue us from his power; then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you alone, O Lord, are God.” [2 Kings 19.17-19]

Hezekiah's logic here is noteworthy: if a man made a god, then a man could destroy that same god.  But not so with the LORD GOD!

I sometimes think we are not convinced that the LORD is God.  I sometimes think we are no more confident in Him than we are a piece of wood, stone, or metal.  But not so here in this account chronicling Hezekiah's response!  Like his forefather David before the giant Goliath, Hezekiah had something rise up within him that categorically rejected the lies and reality before him.  Hezekiah found a confidence that went beyond man-made idols and the wishful thinking associated with them.

If God is indeed God, then He will protect His people who call out to Him!  This principle applied to Hezekiah and Judah and it applies today to Christ-followers everywhere.  We just need to spread our case before Him and ask for His help!  Hezekiah prayed and so should we!

Father, You see the godlessness that has encroached upon my home, the USA.  The former Godliness of this nation has been diluted with ideas and theories that threaten the very strength of this nation.  We have stooped spiritually to allow ourselves to follow our every carnal desire making us no better than dogs.  And, we have justified murder to deal with the consequences of illicit behavior.  What's more, we have embraced the ways of Sodom while the fabric of our nationality is being shredded by Godless, self-serving leaders.  Oh God, forgive us, rescue us by revival, and heal our land!
