“O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name! But who am I, and who are my people, that we could give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us! We are here for only a moment, visitors and strangers in the land as our ancestors were before us. Our days on earth are like a passing shadow, gone so soon without a trace. [1 Chronicles 29.13-15]
If only we could get this right! If only we could carry this idea and attitude throughout each day. If only we could live our lives with no other aspiration but to thank and praise the LORD.
If we took these statements of David seriously, making them our own, I dare say that trouble, as we know it, would greatly decrease.
It seems our troubles begin when we forget, first and foremost, to thank and praise God. From there, we begin taking ownership of stuff. Then, we lose sight of just how brief life really is. These things have more to do with our current troubles than we dare admit.
The words from 1 Chronicles above are the words of an old and dying man. No doubt, they are words of wisdom for the ages.
Father, I am grateful for the reminder today that neither my life nor any thing is my own, but that all things belong to and come from You.
